About Dr Houghton

Dr Houghton was born and raised in New Jersey, becoming the first physician in his entire family. He earned his medical degree from New Jersey Medical School (Now Rutgers Medical School) in 2002. He then went on to complete his residency in Internal Medicine and his fellowship in Gastroenterology at the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in 2005 and 2008, respectively. After spending several years in private practice, he moved to southern Ohio in 2012, and has been practicing at Southern Ohio Medical Center, as the Senior Medical Director of Gastroenterology, since that time. He is also an Adjunct Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine, at the Ohio University School of Osteopathic Medicine, helping to educate our future doctors.

He has been in practice for 15 years, remaining board certified in both Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology for his entire career. He is an expert in endoscopic procedures, performing over 1,000 upper endoscopies and 1,000 colonoscopies every year, putting him in the top percentile in the country. He is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Best Doctors in America, Ohio Top Docs, Castle-Connelly Top Doctor, and Marquis Who’s Who in Medicine recipient. He is a Fellow of the American College of Gastroenterology, and a member of the American Gastroenterological Association, the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation, and the Ohio State Medical Association. He has lent his expertise to dozens of health and wellness publications, and is an expert medical reviewer for Singlecare.com and Seasons.com.

Dr Houghton’s overall philosophy is to treat all of his patients with the utmost respect, regardless of who they are. He makes sure to carefully listen to his patients, and then decides on a course of action only after a thorough history taking. He has a passion for patient education, which has led him to write “What Your Doctor Doesn’t (Have the Time to) Tell You: The Gastrointestinal System”. He is keenly aware of the lack of time that doctors and healthcare providers have to spend with their patients. As a result, he hopes this book will empower its readers to take control of their digestive conditions.
